Social Media and Politics

I hated the last election.  Not because of the candidates, but because of what I saw it do to my friends and so many others on the social media sites.  It was brutal.  Derogatory comments were slung back and forth, vicious and slanderous pictures were posted and feelings were hurt.  Opinions brought about malicious remarks that made the politicians themselves look good and that’s saying something.  I began to hide several people and their posts until after the election.

However, just as I thought it was safe to come out of hiding, the debate of gun control breaks loose making the elections seem tame.  Now, I’m not saying people shouldn’t have an opinion or shouldn’t be passionate about their positions.  However, I have always believed that the behavior of the messenger can overshadow the message and lose it in the shouting.  Valid points don’t need venom to have value.  You may be able to force people with a baseball bat, but you’ll win them with a soft argument and a respect of their opinions whether you agree with them or not.

The art of persuasion has been lost and in its place pressure resides.  We cannot convince people, so we will coerce them.  If we can’t rally them, then we’ll ridicule them, instead.  The bickering banter bludgeons the brain cells and reputations are reduced to a bloody mess.  It’s a sickening, sad situation.

I don’t mind seeing people standing up for what they believe and shouting it out, but the screeching needs to stop.  The hypocrisy needs to stop, as well.  One of the things I have noticed is that some are shouting for their rights to hold a gun while they want to deny the rights of people to hold hands.  While a gun doesn’t scare them, a gay couple being married does.  They want everyone to be like them, live like them, and believe like them.  That’s close-minded arrogance. Everyone has the right to live in a way that brings them happiness during this journey called Life.  As you don’t want people to infringe on yours, do not be the roadblock that keeps them from theirs.

We have too many restrictions and laws that are created out of fear and misunderstanding.  Just because something is allowed doesn’t mean you have to like it.  It only means you have to respect the other person’s right to pursue their happiness; their security in this life.  For some that’s a gun, while for others it’s the chance to love who they want without persecution.  For me, I would much rather see people holding hands than holding guns and see the fight for warm hearts in my newsfeeds rather than cold steel.  When fighting for rights fight for everyone’s; not just yours.

  1. I share your lament as well. I think our politics have become divisive because it benefits the politicians and, more importantly, the parties. I would like Americans to be better citizens than their leaders, and quit jumping on this bandwagon that is splitting our nation. Disunity is our greatest weakness. It is the easiest thing in the world to hate the representative of an opposing viewpoint. Reasoned, patriotic discussion takes courage. I would like to see more of it.

    1. I completely agree, Stacey. It's gotten to the point where he who screams the loudest thinks he will win. Here's to more people having the courage to discuss, not destroy. Thanks for visiting!

  2. Couldn't have said this any better, Robbie a very compelling position on such important social issues. People get so caught up in being right that they tend to forget that there are individuals with feelings on the other end. I, like you, tend not to get into political arguments/conversations/debates but sometimes you can only listen to or read so much nonsense before you want to stand up and ask, really? I never understood the reason behind hateful positions on anything especially when most of the time, those who yell the loudest will not be affected whatsoever. If a straight person is screaming about keeping gay couples from having the right to marry I always laugh and think, if you're straight, who cares it won't have any bearing on your life so live and let live. As for guns...don't even get me going or this will turn into a blog on your blog... : )

    1. Blog away lol...And it is sad, really. Honest, respectful communication seems to be a lost art. And people who fight for their way is the only right way just stir up hate. We all need to take a deep breath and if it doesn't affect us leave it alone. Thanks for visiting! I always love your points of view.

  3. Wow Robbie...deep, insightful, just plain logical...I love it. I wish many more would consider this...we have come as far as we have as a world wide civilization because of our differing cultures, opinions, and beliefs. When we are faced with what we DON'T want, then we know what we WANT, and each individual likes/needs DIFFERENT things. Because of those varying desires, look what we have accomplished. With expansion like that, what is there to get pushy, bossy, violent about??? It could be as simple as a buffett in one of your southern pit stops..."I'll have some of that, but liver? No, I'll pass thanks."

    1. Shivers at the thought of liver...lol

Diversity is and always has been the key to progress. We grow as people when we embrace others different than ourselves and don't judge what we don;t understand or even agree with. Thanks for visiting, Christina!

  4. Love the article! Make me feel good as a gay man to know that there are people out there who are straight and not afraid to say they accept people for who they are and are not afraid to stand up and say so! It take people like you to help break down stereotypes people have about the LGBTCommunity! Than you sir!

    1. Quite welcome! And my views are let people live their life they way they want to. As long as it's not hurting anyone why should anyone else care. Thanks for visiting and commenting!
